Negative density dependence in the mortality and growth of tropical tree seedlings is strong, and primarily caused by fungal pathogens

چکیده
Natural enemies have been implicated as agents of negative density dependence (NDD) in tropical forests, but their relative contributions to NDD, and thus the maintenance diversity, are largely unknown. We monitored rates survival growth on seedlings for 10 years moist forest Manu National Park, Peru. then experimentally manipulated plots exclude fungal pathogens, insects, small mammals large an additional 31 months assess influence these natural density-dependent interactions among seedlings. Fungal pathogens made most important contribution NDD. The application fungicide led lower mortality rates, faster decreased species diversity. Other taxa had at minor effects seedling performance. Synthesis. conclude that strongest contributors widely observed NDD occurs Moreover, presence augments diversity seedlings, indicating critical coexistence structure tree communities.

There is increasing interest in the role played by density-dependent mortality from natural enemies, particularly plant pathogens, in promoting the coexistence and diversity of tropical trees. Here, we review four issues in the analysis of pathogen-induced density dependence that have been overlooked or inadequately addressed. First, the methodology for detecting density dependence must be robu...

Neighbour-regulated mortality: the influence of positive and negative density dependence on tree populations in species-rich tropical forests
Halton A. Peters* Department of Biological Sciences, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305, USA *Correspondence: E-mail: hpeters@globalecology. stanford.edu Abstract Density-dependent mortality has long been posited as a possible mechanism for the regulation of tropical forest tree density. Despite numerous experimental and phenomenological investigations, the extent to which such mechanisms ...
